bravely
again this year.
Heedless
of the forecast freeze
they threw themselves
into billowing 
beauty,
pink clouds that would
brown
by morning.

Purple finches
perch 
in place
of petals
and glossy 
greening new
leaves
bedeck 
bare branches.

Next year
they
will try
again.
